Volvo or more formally the Volvo Car Corporation is separate from Volvo AB which is the commercial vehicle division that makes trucks, buses and other heavy machinery. Volvo is owned by Ford motor group, and is the last remaining part of the Premier Automotive Group division of Ford, that originally contained Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo and Aston Martin, with Ford selling all the other companies, and a sale of Volvo too now looks likely within the next year. Volvo has built its reputation primarily on the safety aspect of the cars, and is one of its key marketing components. It introduced several world firsts in automotive safety, such as laminated glass, the 3 point safety belt, padded dashboards, Side impact protection, side airbags and the high mounted brake light. Current UK Volvo Models: Volvo C30 The Volvo C30 is the smallest model Volvo currently produce, being a 3 door hatchback but marketed more as a 3 door coupe model. the C30 is based on the Ford Focus platform, but with driving dynamics softened to suit the more mature tastes of the typical Volvo customer. The C30 is also priced much higher than the equivalent Focus model to push the car towards the premium small cars offered by rivals such as the Audi A3 and BMW 1-Series. Prices for the C30 start from £14,990 on the road in the UK. Volvo S40 The Volvo S40 is the twin sister of the V50 Estate model and they share the same basic architecture. Most car manufacturers would market them as a saloon and estate version of the same model but the Volvo policy seems to be to push them as 2 separate models. They both share the similar Ford Focus underpinnings as the C30, and ride a little more firmly than some of the larger Volvo models that customers are traditionally used to. The S40 also has the innovative "floating dash" design that gives the appearance that the centre console is separate from the dash - a clever piece of visual design. Volvo V50 The Volvo V50 as mentioned is effectively the same car as the S40 above, and shares all of its characteristics. It is a junior lifestyle estate car, and while it has an estate lifting tailgate, it is not particularly capacious so those looking for the legendary carrying capacity of Volvo models in days gone by should look at the larger V70 model. The V50 prices start from £16,490 on the road in the UK. Volvo C70 The Volvo C70 is now into its second generation, with the first model being a standard fabric roofed convertible, and this new car having an increasingly popular folding hard top. Both are true 4 seat cars, with good levels of space in the rear for full size adult passengers - something of a rarity in convertibles, particularly folding metal roofed ones. The C70 has never been a sports car, and with comfort orientated suspension settings is much more suited to the role of boulevard cruiser, something at which it is very accomplished. Volvo V70 The Volvo V70 is the archetypal Volvo and the companies most recognisable model - a big squared off estate car with cavernous carrying capacity in the boot - there are few car on sale that fulfill this role better than the V70, which is capable of cruising all day with huge amounts of luggage - one of the reasons the car is so popular with the UK motorway police force - the V70 will take all the equipment they need and more. Volvo XC70 The Volvo XC70 takes the V70 model as a base and modifies it for some light off road work, adding 4 wheel drive, raising the ground clearance with longer travel suspension, and bolting on a rugged looking plastic bodykit to complete the SUV look. The V70 will not climb mountains in the manner of a Land Rover, but for the occasional muddy green lane, it's perfect, and is very popular with the country set because of this. Volvo S80 The Volvo S80 is effectively the saloon version of the V70, sharing the same platform, engines, bodywork and interior, but has never sold in as large numbers as the more popular estate. It is an executive car but the Volvo badge does not quite have the same cache as one from BMW or Mercedes, so the S80 lacks the popularity and also the residual values. It tends to come loaded with more equipment as standard and a cheaper list price than its Germanic rivals to try and compensate for this. Volvo XC60 The Volvo XC60 is the newest of the Volvo models, and is a compact 4x4 SUV that focuses mainly on road driving rather than attempting to beat rivals such as the Land Rover Freelander at its own game. Volvo is making strides in moving away from the boxy styling of its cars of the 70's and 80's with the XC60 being a particularly good looking and curvaceous junior 4x4. unfortunately the market segment the model is positioned in is incredibly competitive with nearly every volume and premium car manufacturer having an offering in this segment, and with the popularity of 4x4's on the wane in the recession, the XC60 has not taken off in the way Volvo were hoping in emulating its big brother the XC90. Volvo XC90 The Volvo XC90 is the brands largest car - a full size 7 seat SUV 4x4 off roader that is more focused on the school run than going rock climbing, making the car popular for big families. The XC90 avoids some of the more overt aggressive styling of some of the other big 4x4's on the market and hence has picked up a lot of sales to women who use it for picking up the kids. The XC90 starts from £29,995 on the road in the UK.

The next generation Kia Optima is set to make its world premiere at the 2010 New York International Auto Show. "The next generation of Kia Optima possesses the power to surprise," says Peter Schreyer, Kia's Chief Design Officer. "It's a car that people will simply not expect from Kia - and that's exactly what we set out to achieve." Kia has officially unveiled the next Optima four-door coupe, ahead of the full reveal set to take place at the 2010 New York Auto Show. Kia’s new flagship sedan/coupe looks to be a far more attractive and far more worthy of a flagship designation.

Just weeks ago Kia released new sketches of the upcoming 2011 Magentis four-door coupe – currently known as the Optima sedan in America. The sketches look to be very true to the now official images that have been released ahead of the full reveal set for the upcoming 2010 New York Auto Show. The saloon exudes an athletic confidence from every angle - its raked roofline, high and pronounced shoulder line of its sculpted flanks and its extended wheelbase are complemented by flared wheelarches and a shallow glasshouse that create a saloon with a muscular, self-assured stance. The striking visage of the car features a new interpretation of Kia's bold 'tiger' family face that's edged by piercing projector headlamps.

The Kia Optima is currently the flagship sedan for the automaker and the next model gains considerable changes in the exterior cosmetics department. The outgoing Optima is a fairly tame sedan, but Kia is replacing its sedan with a much sportier silhouette – much more akin to a coupe, than a sedan. So much so, Kia says the 2011 Optima will be labeled as a 4-door coupe, rather than a sedan. Following the theme of recent model revisions, new Kia Optima is longer, lower and wider than before, the Kia's coupe-like profile is enhanced by the sweeping chrome arc that flows from A to C pillar, a distinctive design motif that visually lowers the car further still and enhances its cab-backwards proportions.

In addition to significantly overhauling the overall styling direction of the Magentis/Optima, Kia says that it will be bringing its next flagship sedan/coupe closer to the ground with a lower stance, in addition to giving it a wider and more stable stance to go long with its longer wheelbase. Kia says the end result is a four-door coupe that has more room for its occupants and cargo alike, as well as a more planted driving dynamic. "For this car we started with a clean sheet and worked to achieve an exterior design with a European feeling and stance," explains Gregory Guillaume, Chief Designer, Kia Europe. To help achieve this, the exterior was designed by his team in Frankfurt. The interior was created by the design team in California.

Power-wise, the Optima will use the same engines as the 2011 Sonata and will be offered in four and six-cylinder versions. The four-cylinder offering, should it come from the 2011 Sonata, will be a 2.4-liter good for 200 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft of torque – all the while getting as much as 35 miles per gallon on the highway. The new D-segment offering is spacious, and with class-leading levels of safety and luxury equipment, the intelligently configured and driver-oriented cabin underlines a newfound poise and presence. "This new model embodies Kia's confident new design direction," says Schreyer. "It's a global car with individual appeal."
The Kia Optima is expected to hit the market in the fall of 2010, with a hybrid version possibly available at lunch, or relatively soon after.

SLS AMG GT3 Mercedes-Benz - Luxurious Super Sports cars

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is one of the biggest supercar releases of the past year. But the company isn't content with just making ultra luxurious supercars for the rich and well dressed, they also plan on releasing a fully homologated GT3 race version for the gentleman racer.

The GT3 racing version of the SLS AMG is powered by the same mid-front mounted 6.3 litre V8 engine as the road car. There'll probably be a few modifications for the race unit, but Mercedes haven't yet announced final power outputs or specifications. Or even a final weight figure. That's all for the FIA to decide in the near future as part of the homologation process.

Power transmission in the SLS AMG GT3 is done through a six-speed sequential racing transmission with steering wheel shift paddles and an integrated multi-disc locking differential. As in the SLS AMG road car, the transmission is located at the rear axle for better weight distribution: the engine and transmission are connected by a torque tube within which a carbon-fibre shaft rotates at the engine speed.

The new car, named the BOSS 302R, will be available as a serialized off-road-only vehicle, limited in number to a total of 50 units. Ford reports the car was designed In honor of the 40th anniversary of Parnelli Jones' 1970 Trans-Am championship in a Ford Mustang Boss 302 prepared by Bud Moore Engineering, Ford Racing is introducing the Ford Mustang Boss 302R, a factory-built race car ready for track days and road racing in a number of Grand-Am, SCCA and NASA classes.

"To keep pace with consumer demand, the Ford team has built modern versions of the most iconic performance Mustangs over the years," said Jamie Allison, director, Ford North America Motorsports. "From Shelbys to Bullitt, Mach and Cobra Jet, it is now time for Boss to join the list of America's most coveted Mustangs. The original Boss 302 was a championship-winning legend and the new Ford Mustang Boss 302R will carry on the tradition. The Mustang was born to race from the start, and this new Mustang is bred to win."

The Ford Mustang Boss 302R is a serialized off-road-only vehicle ready to race. Each base model will come with a 5.0-liter four-valve engine and a six-speed manual transmission with a roll cage, race seats, safety harness, data acquisition and race dampers/springs, and a Brembo brake and tire package, starting at an MSRP of $79,000.

And, with a special Grand-Am Homologation Package (M-FR500-Boss R1), it will also be ready to compete in the Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge series (formerly known as KONI Challenge), starting with the season-opening race in Daytona on Jan. 29, 2010. Five Boss 302R race cars will be delivered to customers ready to race in Daytona. MSRP of the Boss 302R1 is $129,000.

The Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge-ready Ford Mustang Boss 302R will feature a sealed high-output race engine with an upgraded cooling system, a close-ratio six-speed transmission with integral shifter, a seam-welded body, race suspension/KONI dampers and ABS brake tuning, race performance exhaust and a high-speed balance one-piece driveshaft.

According to Jamie Allison, director of Ford North American Motorsports, "We expect the BOSS 302R to continue the successful tradition of winning with factory-built production-based race cars from Ford Racing. The FR500C and FR500S road racing Mustangs, and the Mustang FR500CJ (Cobra Jet) for drag racing have proven to be great cars for our customers, helping teams win races and championships. We believe that the BOSS 302R will provide that same sort of competitive product for our customers with the tradition you can only get from Ford Racing."

The DUB Edition Mustang is based on Ford’s outstanding new 3.7-liter V-6 Mustang and will be available this fall. Honda has announced today the launch of their new BTCC team and also premiered the special edition Honda Civic Type R MUGEN 200. As you have probably already guessed, the Honda Civic Type R MUGEN 200 will be built in only 200 units and will go on sale in April. In addition to the jam-packed Civic Type R MUGEN with its tweaked 240HP 2.0-liter i-VTEC, of which only 20 units will be sold in the UK at a hefty £38,599 a piece (approximately US$60,300 or €44,400 at today's exchange rates), Honda today announced that it will offer a less hardcore variant of the hot hatch without the performance upgrades.

The first step taken by Edo Competition was improving the power output. The DBS’s engine control unit was modified via software recalibration, then supported by a new high performance exhaust system, and was fitted with special catalytic converters and high flow air filters. As a result, the DBS’s power output was increased from 517 hp and 570 Nm (420 ft-lb) to 550 hp and 600 Nm (442 ft-lb), an enough power to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.1 seconds and continue on to a top speed of 320 km/h (199 mph).

The high performance exhaust system, which was specially designed for the DBS, incorporates butterfly valves allowing it to produce a fantastically rich and sonorous sound.
